Immediate Goals: HAF and community partners aim to create Cooperatives of farmers and farming families to increase the impacts of HAF’s agricultural projects. Together these individual Cooperatives will form a network of organic farmers which can market and sell produce on the domestic and international markets.
The Importance of Cooperative Building: Cooperatives are a natural extension of the democracy-building processes necessary for the people to break their cycle of poverty, exemplified via subsistence farming. By uniting their resources and skills, farmers and local farmers’ associations can maximize their opportunities related to organic cultivation and commercialization of fruit trees and medicinal plants. Value-added processing (including packaging and branding of organic produce) and capacity-building training programs (in organic techniques and in business and financial management) will be facilitated through these cooperatives. Provincial-level cooperatives established by HAF integrate youth and women, and are dedicated to participatory governance supporting communities and entrepreneurs in gaining access to larger markets for increased income generation.
